Item Writing on the island(2024) Montalvo-Hamid, Andrea; Ponder, Laura; Guerra, Jennifer; Ruggles, Kristen; Johnson, Frances Ćurčija; Murphy, SusanWelcome to the Island University! The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi First-Year Writing Program coordinates ENGL 0101, 1301, and 1302, to provide the best instruction in writing that we can. This instruction is meant to prepare you for your years in college and in your future careers and life paths. At TAMU-CC, we have a long history of teaching writing in ways that are informed by the national scholarly conversation of writing studies. The excellence of this program is evident in the best practices we use and bring to the classroom, in our major, minor, and certificates, and in the research and scholarship of our faculty. In addition, it is evident in this textbook, which is updated with the latest theories of writing, learning, and tackles questions of generative artificial intelligence (generative AI). Our classroom practices are informed by research on how people write, how they learn, and what they need to be flexible, adept writers ready to take on new challenges. Since 1994, the First-Year Writing Program has worked with First-Year Seminar and the First-Year Learning Communities Program to teach writing in ways that connects to majors, meets the needs of first-year students, and coordinates with the demands of other first-year classes. As a program, we are primarily attempting to help you: Understand that writing, language, and rhetoric are all multifaceted and evolving, and Be able to use writing and language in ways that will help you achieve your goals. Those of us who teach Writing and Rhetoric I and II worked together to construct this book both out of original material we wrote and by bringing in content from other creative commons projects. We hope it is helpful and useful to you! Go Islanders!
